Review: Overall a showman of a film. Flashy, loud with bells and whistles and big personalities, an exciting premise... illusionists rob banks using (supposed) magic but the four horsemen are just puppets in a game, but the hype is more than the substance of the film itself.Youd expect suspense, twists, intelligent plot misdirection and all sorts of thrilling viewing? No. This film tries to be a lot more intelligent than it actually is. Like Atlas (Eisenberg) says, Always be the most intelligent person in the room or something similar, this film thinks it is being intelligent but actually its not challenging enough. It gives too much away, isnt as unpredictable as it should be (really, you couldnt see that ending coming?) and just isnt as clever as it promises. The tricks I really wanted explaining werent... the ones that were more obvious, were explained. The ending actually isnt a denouement, as its been laying clues all along - and anyone whos seen a lot of films can see the twists coming a mile away. I focus on the twists and reveal because as a heist movie, the end is the big reveal. But, unlike Oceans Eleven, for example, it has more or less handed it to you on a plate already.The actors were good. Morgan Freeman and Woody Harrelson stealing the show, of course, with Dave Franco doing a bang up job with some incredible physical acting, stunts and so forth. Im afraid Jesse Eisenberg didnt convince in his character and was annoying after a while, Franco rather underutilised really. Isla Fisher was good but clearly the glamour rather than a serious character, which was a shame as she was good.This was supposed to be a big blockbuster film, big back drops, epic stunts and huge crowd scenes, but it failed to deliver. As heist/magic genre films go its not that great, and The Prestige was far more cerebral and gripping. Entertaining to a point but I got a bit bored, and some of the scenes were too long - chases etc. If you are a fan of heist films or magic youll enjoy it, or are a fan of particular actors, or will just enjoy it for what it is and dont want to be challenged intellectually, its a great film. I think Hollywood endings are just too commonplace. 6/10 for me.

Review: With a miserable 5% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems like I, Frankenstein is one of the worst movies in 2014 and it is only January. The abysmal rating made me lower my expectations and surprisingly it is a solid entertainment. Sure, it doesnt impress on any level but for a January movie, it is an entertaining one.The story: The story is as generic as a Direct-To-DVD movie can be. The Frankensteins Monster, Adam, is caught in a battle between Gargoyles and Demons. Many decent action and dramatic scenes are squeezed into the brief runtime of 1 hour 32 minutes. Thankfully the pace moves briskly without becoming boring. However, the short runtime also poses some problems such as skimping on characters development. But it is expected as this is a mindless action movie which relies more on action and CGI than story and characters development. Acting wise is okay, nobody impresses. Bill Nighy is playing his usual self as a villain. Aaron Eckhart has nothing much to emote as an emotionless monster except fighting and showing off his body. The rest didnt particularly stand out. Music is surprisingly good and fits the tone of the movie.3D: For a post-converted 3D movie, it looks good. There is a good depth between characters and backgrounds. It is also effective when it comes to action scenes especially the flying of Gargoyles and the bursting of the demons.Overall: It is obvious that I, Frankenstein tries to follow the success of the Underworld movies. On its own merits, it provides an entertaining watch with decent special effects and action. I guess it could do better if it is released straight to DVD. It may not be great but for a January movie, it is a decent watch with decent 3D.

Review: It is a perfectly paced surreal piece of cinema. its like nothing I have seen before. Stills from movie will shown in galleries for years to come.The film is not for everyone I must admit. But dont be discouraged by dim witted reviews. The plot is not explained by the characters at every free moment and requires you think and use your imagination to fill in the blanks, which I found so refreshing. I urge you go check this film out first chance you. Its great to original film and original film makers like Glazer pushing the boundaries of film in ways other vfx. The only way people like Glazer will get to carry on making films if everyone gets out and supports these kinds of films. Or we just end up transformers 4 ,5 and 6.

My family came away happy, my son is still mentioning how funny it was.I wont go into detail like most, all I will say is that the whole theater was laughing hard and loud throughout most of the movie, which is what most people want when they go see a comedy, to laugh NOT think.For those that already know Melissa McCarthy, you know what to expect and you will not be disappointed. A beautifully crafted motion picture, this quirky love story is sure to resonate with you once youve seen it. It is an extremely interesting (and realistic) look at the future - Jonzes quaint and poignant film is a must-see! 9/10

Review: So it seems JJ Abrams has traded in too many lens flares for too many closeups. The working title of Star Trek Into Darkness could probably have been Chris Pines Facial Pores. Seriously JJ - there is such a thing as long and middle shots too you know, and whats more - if you use them - when you *do* use a closeup, it has more dramatic effect, just sayin...Anyway, directorial style flaws aside, my big gripe with STID is that its just another sci-fi movie. What always set Trek apart was that Roddenberry created an enlightened future, a refreshing change of pace to most sci-fi, and the conflict therefore had to come from cleverer places. But with this reboot every character is constantly bickering, I frankly left the theater with a headache as if Id just been to a teenage kids birthday party. I can get bickering, and grit, and violence from *any* sci-fi feature, and sadly now it seems like Trek has followed suit and lost its original edge. Its not until the very final minute where a little bit of the original Trek feel is re-established, but for me that was far too little, far too late.Theres some giant plot holes too, if youre actually thinking about whats going on. It seems like Abrams hoped that if he put enough glitz and dazzle on the screen, most people would entirely miss the fact that they are there. I guess his gamble was correct, since the film is currently standing at an 8.4 IMDb score.Its not all bad. Benedict Cumberbatch is an incredible, intense villain and the film is worth seeing for his performance alone. And as with the first, the rest of the cast is exceptional. Theres nothing wrong with the acting, music, or look of this film... just a lot wrong with the script and the tone of the whole thing. If youre not a Star Trek fan, youll likely enjoy it... its big, frenetic, popcorn munching silliness. But if you are a Trek fan, particularly of the quieter explorations of the human condition that TNG did so well, then you might be pretty disappointed.

Review: After seeing RISE on Channel 4 last night I promised myself I wasnt going to waste two hours of my life and money on a bus and cinema ticket to watch a Hollywood blockbuster sequel . Maybe the Summer heat has been frying my brain because I found myself taking a long walk to Edinburgh city centre and spending £8.20 on a ticket to watch DAWN . Perhaps I was trying to teach myself a lesson in that I should always stick to gut instinct ? When someone makes a decision they should stick to it otherwise bad things might happen DAWN starts in exactly the same manner as RISE finished . Simian flu sweeps across the world killing billions of humans and this economy of storytelling is very effective indeed . Unfortunately when were introduced to the surviving humans theres been a massive spanner thrown in to the works because theyre all living in a small district of San Francisco . Whats wrong with that you ask ? Common sense should tell you thats the worst place you can stay in after a catastrophe . As John Wyndham and John Christopher point out in their novels a city is nothing more than a concrete desert . Surely theyd be hundreds of thousands of dead bodies in the city ? Wont this lead to all types of secondary diseases ? How you going to farm crops in a city ? I suppose there might be some supplies left but after ten years of industrial collapse people still have access to cigars and cigarettes . Im guessing simian flu only affects non smokers ? Im also guessing youre not supposed to think too deeply about this scenario because it doesnt really hold up to much examination . Characters are shown to having access to military hardware but the military are conspicuous by their absence . This is probably down to plot function . The human survivors need access to a hydro dam just outside the city in order to gain electricity and kick off the plot . The human enclave need electricity in order to power communications to contact other human communities but its impossible to believe that in ten years after the flu outbreak not one single warship has berthed in the docks , or a military plane has landed at the airport or a self sufficient military unit has entered the cityAnother slight problem is that the characters are like in the previous film rather one dimensional and underwritten . Weve got the nice male human character , the nice female human character , the bad ethnic minority human , the good ethnic minority human etc and this is mirrored by the ape community . If youve any knowledge of Soviet history you might just second guess how things pan out in the ape community and its the actors playing the apes in a motion capture suits who make the biggest impression . If youre going to cast Gary Oldman at least give him a part deserving of his talents and have him do something interesting with his character Its a pity the film is let down by a succession of small flaws because I did like it but wanted to love it and the movie doesnt quite pull it off . It is a solid relatively dark blockbuster better than the film that preceded it and better than most Summer fare thats been released over the last few years but dont think its anywhere near deserving of its position of 150 on the IMDb top movies list and feel like the HOBBIT movies will quickly drop out of the list . As it stands the original franchise was probably more enjoyable as a whole due to its imagination

Review: One of these days Step Up will realize that its better for the characters to just whimsically dance like in old musical movie without forcing an already stagnant plot. The movie boasts a dynamic choreography and stellar music to go with it, some are timed just right and they are admittedly entertaining. It commendably tries to bring a dancers perspective on their life style and tribulation, but the plot often contradicts the effort by putting overly flamboyant characters or tired plot. In the end its just another drawn out excuse for a dance battle, albeit a rather spectacular one.Story revolves around characters from previous installments, collaborating to make a crew to win the high stake dance competition. No Channing Tatum though. If this sounds familiar, it is. There are monetary issues, personal issues and dances in between. For what its worth, the two leads try to bring more emotion to the mix, although only a few good moments come out of it. Adam Sevani (Moose) is a star, the uncrowned lead of the series. Its quiet amazing that his side story resonates more than the actual main plot.Problem arises when the movie attempts to exaggerate flamboyant lifestyle, especially those of celebritys and their reality television. Its far from witty; in fact the humor tends to fall and becomes tiresome to watch. The main antagonists are mediocre unsavory characters; the male is copied directly from the typical random thug that messes with Chuck Norris or Steven Seagal at a bar, while the female is a botched version of Stanley Tuccis character from Hunger Games.When the characters dont banter they perform well. Using odd props and good dance moves, they manage to produce a spectacle. Most of the cast are primarily dancers, so they convince the audience better using motion than poorly written script. Wardrobe looks good, each dance is represented with unique costume, the steampunk one is particularly exceptional. With simple yet effective effect, these dance sequences are the heights of the movie.Like any other installments, the plot is almost a hindrance as audience waits for another dance scene to erupt. It does try to make audience relate, although it misses the mark more often than not, which is a shame since it invests plenty of time for it. The glossy choreograph and heart-thumping soundtracks present an enjoyable light flick, and to be fair its what viewer would expect, but sadly nothing more.

The human enclave need electricity in order to power communications to contact other human communities but its impossible to believe that in ten years after the flu outbreak not one single warship has berthed in the docks , or a military plane has landed at the airport or a self sufficient military unit has entered the cityAnother slight problem is that the characters are like in the previous film rather one dimensional and underwritten . Weve got the nice male human character , the nice female human character , the bad ethnic minority human , the good ethnic minority human etc and this is mirrored by the ape community . If youve any knowledge of Soviet history you might just second guess how things pan out in the ape community and its the actors playing the apes in a motion capture suits who make the biggest impression . If youre going to cast Gary Oldman at least give him a part deserving of his talents and have him do something interesting with his character Its a pity the film is let down by a succession of small flaws because I did like it but wanted to love it and the movie doesnt quite pull it off . It is a solid relatively dark blockbuster better than the film that preceded it and better than most Summer fare thats been released over the last few years but dont think its anywhere near deserving of its position of 150 on the IMDb top movies list and feel like the HOBBIT movies will quickly drop out of the list . As it stands the original franchise was probably more enjoyable as a whole due to its imagination

Review: The Monuments Men is being too critically shunned. It is not what you expect from watching the previews, but comes through with heartfelt stories that are designed to show you what these men endured. Each of The Monuments Men characters come from the arts world and are driven into action by the need to save precious art works spanning across Europe. Bill Murray is a genius per usual but lacks when it comes to on screen time. I feel as though many characters like John Goodman are overshadowed by the likes of Matt Damon and George Clooney. They make themselves very prominent in the script but often take time away from those who would truly make this film shine (Murray and Goodman). Even though it is not as good as expected it shines in many scenes. I still give it a 8/10

Review: This movie is much more than and definitely deeper than one would suspect from the syrupy trailers most people have seen. The understory, gradually revealing the early life of P.L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, and depicting how the people in her dysfunctional family led her to write Mary Poppins, is the true core of this movie. I will never see Mary Poppins in quite the same way. All of the acting is superior, and the score is excellent. This is not the shallow, childlike movie that many will expect. I would not recommend it for children 11 and under, depending on the child. Otherwise, I highly recommend this movie, even if you are not a big fan of the original Mary Poppins film.

Review: ... but 9 / 10 for the fans that love the series.I grew up with all 3 seasons. However, while seasons 1 & 2 were brilliant, season 3 sucked to high heaven. The movie is definitely just for those that really missed the characters and just needed a fresh 107 minutes of Veronica.The story offered isnt exactly water tight, but if youre a true Veronica Mars fan you will overlook the odd logical glitch in the story.One thing that gave me a pleasant surprise was that its still jaw-dropping amazing to look at Kristen Bell. Her cute and sexy voice/smile/attitude just makes you forget about some of the truly crappy storytelling in the movie.That the movie has a rating of 7,8 (03/20/2014) doesnt surprise me. This is just purely a hardcore fan rating.Bottom line: Veronica Mars fans will get what they deserve.

Review: So ...... the Tribeca Film Fest last weekend, and I had a boy I'd seen a horror movie that will be playing at the Film Fest for the rest of the year is always dandy. Called it months m & ecirc; l. and director of the et. al. Pics Magnolia just inked a deal in a note late in the year or early next year. Lets just say, its horror is easily the best film ive seen in theaters in the last 2-3 years, and I smell a success. The acting is excellent, one. G & ecirc; mo thrones actress, I really like, and Brit actress is very good-looking and end the evening with an exciting and unpredictable, I had the pleasure of holding the door of the theater has to offer. My friend and I stayed in the Q & A, and asked the director and co-writer what his influences were the first I had, it was clear as a tribute to some of the conventions of the horror classic. The effect was most Polanski films in general, but in particular said Ros Baby (oh, and by the way ---- a Devil), and Invasion of the Body snatchers 78 version, which I also adore. I saw this film as the third case of a foreigner. In any case, check this out y'all. There is a real doozy and it will be inspired by the classic horror & ocirc; Back on the map, thanks Satan !!!!!!!

Review: Unfortunately, the marketing for this film is normal, and is misleading, as it did for the first. My best advice to you *** avoid trailers at no cost. They include major spoilers for a short time in some very emotional film. This is an animated film to another level, one that crosses generational gaps elegantly and speak volumes of any age group. Because of the critical and audience acclaim beloved predecessor, many are worried that a continuation of the skills do not match the first, it would have been introduced only as lucrative gimmick, as most Hollywood sequels. If this is your speculation, you could be more wrong. This film is worthy of all the hopes and aspirations of you are afraid to use it in the theater. Deblois had us moving story, one that will not be quickly forgotten, that many of us will connect with. During Comic Con 2013, Deblois said it was The Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. This is a hefty commitment succeeded delivered.The HTTYD2 world has been greatly expanded and investigated, very little of the film takes place on Burke. This is much more of an adventure film. The film took everything from HTTYD next level: emotion, power, action, adventure, humor and depth. He takes risks that have seen the film so few animated take, full of twists and turns that will keep you engaged and I invested.For film may be a strong start, a few less kids jokes, and a little slow stimulation (maybe it was about 10 minutes longer) . Apart from some nit-picky details very, that is literally the worst thing I can say about it.HTTYD2 phenomenal film and deservedly pick up an Academy Award for best animated film of the year. John Powell, once again nominated (and hopefully win) for his invention feeling score.This was my most anticipated films of the past two years and has no desire. Four years of work on it to show how this polished film. This is one of those rare films that inspire. And one of the few that you leave the theater feeling very impressed and thought gosh, I can not wait to see that again.
